What Ambition Really Means

I’ve been thinking about ambition.

1. Too often ambition is assumed to be about a desire for money, status, or fame.

The truth is simpler than that:

Ambitious people want to make a bigger impact.

And there are a lot of ways to make an impact that have nothing to do with money, status, or fame.

For example, you could be an ambitious parent.

    2. Most people aren’t ambitious enough.

They’re more likely to come up with reasons not to be ambitious than they are to dream too big.

      3. Wanting more and appreciating what you have are not opposites.

They can – and typically do – co-exist in successful and/or happy people.

        4. Ambition without specificity rarely ends well.

The more clear you are about what exactly it is you want, the more likely you are to get it.

You can’t accomplish a goal you haven’t defined.

          5. Ambition requires confidence.

You’re unlikely to go after something you don’t believe on some level you’re capable of achieving.

But that also means recognizing that confidence isn’t a lack of fear – it’s knowing you’ll be ok even if it doesn’t work out.
