Take the first step.

I cold called the Hollywood Improv.

With no idea how the comedy business worked.

No idea who to talk to at this legendary comedy club.

And no idea what to ask for.

All I knew was I had an idea for a standup show I wanted to produce.

There were lots of reasons not to call: I assumed I’d have to rent out the club, go through agents to book comics, and pay a bunch of money I didn’t have to do so.

Or…

No one would even answer my call.

But that’s not what happened.

The club’s booker answered the phone.

Loved my idea.

And offered to not only put on the show at his club, but to help me produce it.

He’d book the comics based on who I wanted.

He’d pay them.

He’d help promote and market the show.

All for free.

He’d even pay me 50% of the ticket sales.

A couple months later…

The first comedy show I ever produced was a sold out show at the Hollywood Improv featuring Sarah Silverman, Jim Norton, Jeff Ross, Doug Benson, and Tom Segura.

Amazing.

I never could have imagined that would happen when I picked up the phone to call the Improv.

I had no idea how it would play out.

And neither do you.

When you take an initial action you have no idea where it may lead.

Many journeys seem longer than they turn out to be.

This makes it easy to come up with reasons not to act.

To assume the first step isn’t worth taking because there will be too many obstacles in your way beyond it.

Don’t let assumptions get in the way of actions.

Make the call.

Take the first step.

The journey may be shorter than you think.
