Been riding for over 45 years and it still gets me high everytime I jump on my bike so I can live the dream! Excellent video about living your life to the fullest…no regrets and would do it all over again. Highlight of my life was riding to the Vietnam Memorial “Wall” last year, now will do it every year until I have to drop my kickstand one last time. Live to Ride and Ride to Live!

I also am a therapist and I can’t think of doing a better thing with this than to inspire clients with it or a better way to try to convey to people tthat there is much to live for even in the face of what seems to be poor odds. How inspirational is this! I want to get to the gym in spite of my problems and go get a motorcycle…well, maybe not the motorcycle part, but grab the most from life–this is great!!!!

A very touching presentation. In my life and in my profession I have experienced giving up. How often I have witnessed being hit by and surviving a severe calamaty only to come back stronger. Life is like a yo-yo. The ups and downs are the thrilling waves of life. What comes after … well … let’s live today and let every tomorrow be Kalidusa’s “vision of hope.”

James June 12, 2011 Reply

At face value this commercial is inspiring and what-not but once you think about it for a second it makes no god damn sense. It seems the bank is just trying to pull on your heart strings. You think the bank gives a shit about these elderly gentlemen triumphing? Doubt it.

Best comment so far from top down! Positive and without judgement is the human way and so is this video. This delivers a human message of life and it’s ups and downs as well as our lack of control. The final message is one of how we respond to our circumstances if looking at the best possible path. God bless us all. I’m not even religious but it seems we need to get back to something!!!!

Rennie August 24, 2011 Reply

Actually this clip was originally featured in a newscast, and I guess the Bank thought it great enough to buy the rights for their commercial. Look at it this way, if the guys are average at 83 years old and suffering from all the ailments they are having, why not make a go at riding near 2,000 km for a last fling? Like “forte” above, I’ve riden since 16 and am now 65, still riding from Singapore to Penang and back that’s about 1,300km. I sure pray I can live to be 83 let alone ride again. Cheers Bartman, all the best of health to you.

market researcher June 30, 2011 Reply

While this is a very emotionally compelling ad, I wouldn’t say that it is a “great” ad. I work in market research and we specifically test ads. High emotional content is surely memorable and moving, but do you actually remember what company this ad is for? Though the end shows it is for a bank, this ad would be better for a motorcycle company. There is no tie from the actual company/product to the creative. You could tell the entire story of the ad without ever mentioning the company name. Which, unfortunately, makes it a not so great ad from a business perspective. But I will admit that it was fun to watch.

Alex Tsui July 27, 2011 Reply

I think you might want to study marketing again. This bank did not tell is what is the lowest interest rate they have for the day. How holistic is their service. Not even intangible things like customer service, location proximity, etc. It tells a real story and relates it to its core belief: for ordinary people with extra ordinary dreams. I don’t live in Taiwan. I don’t know bank. But I will always remember the name of this bank who has so clearly communicated its dream – also a unverisal value – to its potential customers.

Jason Anderson August 12, 2011 Reply

I think OP’s point was that this was an excellent commercial advertising something that has no relationship to the company paying for the commercial. I found it very moving as well, but I have already forgotten the name of the bank and I just watched it 5 minutes ago.

James Roberson August 17, 2011 Reply

Thanks, The question was why can’t advertising be this good? I think you have answered the question. You may want to try to think with your heart and not so much with your head, but then again you work in market research. You analyze and anatomize when all you need to do is simply “feel”.

Tony July 4, 2011 Reply

I laugh at those that think this is diminished by being a “commercial for a bank”. What would make it better? If it were a commercial for a government agency? A filthy made-for-profit Hollywood movie? An ad for a non-profit that used money that was donated to help their clients—on a fancy commercial?

One of the reasons it is so good is that the Bank could afford to hire actual talent…in writing, acting, music-playing, etc. to create a professional work of art.

Unlike government, for example, whose plodding bureaucracy would have paid twice as much, for a commercial half as good.

Ah…the beauty of capitalism and entrepreneurs. Beautiful things gets made with all that nasty PROFIT.

Richard Shute July 29, 2011 Reply

A friend sent me this commercial last February. Unbeknownst to him, I’d bought a motorcycle about a week before, so his timing was great. I hadn’t had a bike since I sold my Honda in ’79. Now enjoying the hell out of my ’06 Harley-Davidson and making up for much lost time. As one who has dodged a couple of bullets, a small stroke in ’05 and throat cancer in ’07, this commercial hit a deep nerve. I’ve saved it and watch it every now and then to remind myself (though I don’t need too much reminding) how precious and uncertain life can be. While some may see it as a marketing failure, I seem to have committed the name TC Bank to memory because of its universal appeal. Great job!

Ms Thomas August 2, 2011 Reply

Why can’t all advertising be this good someone asks? Because the world has lost it’s sight between right and wrong. It is driven by a false sense of pride, money, greed. This world has continued to support, through the media, vulgar language, illicit sex, violence of all kinds; messages Satan purports using us and which most “buy” into. Just watch any commercial – even yogurt, butter, all have sexual inuendos totally unnecessary! Not to mention the horrible movies Hollywood produces. So what has developed? The severe degradation of morality, dignity, integrity, truth and trust as God intended between you and me. Be Bold Be Catholic ~~~ Be the person God made you to be… at all cost. The only thing in life that matters is the fate of one’s Soul.

JMarra August 4, 2011 Reply

James is absolutely right–you’re being manipulated into good feelings about a BANK, for Chrissake. This has nothing to do with elderly men following a dream. We don’t even know if they’re real men, or if the whole thing is a concocted script. IT’S ADVERTISING, PEOPLE–IT’S *SUPPOSED* TO HAVE AN EFFECT ON YOU. Get out from under the corporate massage machine. Sheesh.

Sean October 9, 2011 Reply

I live in Taiwan and the story is true. Motorcycles and scooters are major transportation here like over 70% of the population know how to ride. Circling the island in any form is popular activity during summer vacation here.
I know it’s a bank commercial, but I don’t see it with cynicism in this case.

S. Perry August 5, 2011 Reply

Sweet, touching commercial. Now….what was the name of that bank?

James August 7, 2011 Reply

This is actually a horrible commercial for two reasons:

1) It’s so consciously melodramatic and ‘heart-string tugging’ that it’s actually laughable; and

2) It has literally nothing to do with the product.

Kaj Pedersen August 18, 2011 Reply

One thing this can not be called is horrible. Melodramatic and heart-string tugging, absolutely, and as most commercials it does not necessarily have to have anything to do with the product. Like most beer adds, half-naked women and cute animals, what is that all about.

But I have been riding myself for well over 30 years, and have old friends that I enjoy riding with, so in that sense the commercial suits my purpose, and don’t really care what the product was that they were advertising. Sappy, yes, but I liked it.

JOfNW August 23, 2011 Reply

You seemed unable to have a good grasp with simple concepts.

1. Nobody cares if it is a commercial
2. People feel touched and inspired from the story. It had nothing to do with whether it is a commercial and a made-up story.

It is not the point – get it?

SzTu Jie August 7, 2011 Reply

An inspiring commercial. Celebrates life, despite its tragedies and setbacks.

Living with cancer myself, had a small stroke and other problems that have made my golden years somewhat less than untarnished. However, I count my blessings (which are greater than my set-backs) and continue on.

BTW, although an American of non-oriental heritage, wo hwei guoyu, and have lived in Taiwan. Makes the commercial even more poignant.

I just watched this AD again (3X) after I first saw it many months ago – after reading the various comments I must agree with ‘Tim’ – aside from the funny ones, who wants to see commercials? – this takes advertising to a whole different level – it is not the motorcycles, or the bank, or the men, it is the “Dream” that we all live for – these men had lost the dream and were long dead on the inside – this ad is about them finding it again – I work at an Assisted Living center – without the “dream” life looses its purpose – I think one day you will all understand what this AD really meant, and I hope you will remember it and profit from its wisdom.

Gracelin August 13, 2011 Reply

I live in Taiwan and can witness this commercial is based on a true story. It was on the media long before this comercial, that five aged seniors rode on their bikes to tour around the Island coastline in 13 days. Foreign viewers may not be easy to remember the bank’s name since it’s not a world renowned bank, nor it’s easy to pronounce. However, as a resident in Taipei, I immediately transferred some of my funds to this bank
after seeing it on T.V. as an endorsement to this touching commercial. Yes, they return satisfactorily.

I retire in January and soon thereafter hopefully ride my V-Star towards the rising sun – all the way to the right coast, then turn around and ride West, back home to San Jose.
It shouldn’t be that hard, maybe a little inconvenient, you see, I’m on a feeding tube due to throat cancer. I’d like to do it before I reach 80.
If these ole guys can do it, so can I.

I myself have been riding for well over 30 years, and my daily ride today is a 1949 Nimbus. We are a small groups of Nimbus owners here in the states, and an even smaller group here in sunny California, but it is the same feeling we get when riding these old vintage bikes as it was the first time we ever took a bike for a spin. Therefore I love this commercial, and the entire story behind it. No matter if you are 30, 40, 50 or in your 80s, like these elderly gentlemen, taking life by the small hairs and do a ride like they did, it is simply a show of the ultimate appreciation for life. Not to mention honoring their old friend and the one gentleman’s spouse. Goosebumps every time I watch it, thanks for sharing.

I wish my BSA and Indian riding dad could have seen this before he died at 82…maybe he’d have gotten another bike and another ‘bite at the Apple’. Bless these old boys!

I understand why the cynic in us resents that it’s an ad for some bank – but think about all the things we gain from venal patronages: the good music, the good films, the whole friggin’ European Renaissance. Focus on the art, not the finance, and let it lighten your load – not add to your burdens.

I’m gonna watch this again now…I need it.

Too bad the high had to come from barrelling around at high speeds, spewing pollution and consuming precious dwindling supplies of carbon fuels. The same euphoria and reenergizing can come from non-consumptive activities. Appreciation of friends, nature, children, flowers, songs, music, pets, — so many possibilities exist for renewal that are earth/planet supportive.
