How Steve Martin (doesn’t) outline

Back in 2005 I interviewed Steve Martin for a Creative Screenwriting magazine article and asked if he outlines.

Here’s what he said:

“I never use notecards and never outline. I just open up Final Draft and make notes on the page to remember things. But I might make notes for a year or two before I start to write something.

On Bowfinger, I thought about it for 10 years before I started writing it.

I like the idea of just sitting down and starting and having vague ideas. Sometimes vague ideas create very original, surprising ideas.”
