Ice Cube had never acted before when he was cast in Boyz In The Hood.
So he “enrolled” in an unusual film school.
The movie’s director John Singleton had Cube come to his house and watch movies with him.
He showed him good movies AND bad movies.
Then explained to Cube what made them good or bad.
One day Singleton asked Cube a question that shocked him.
“When are you gonna write a movie?”
Cube replied he wasn’t even sure he could act in a movie yet, let alone write one.
Singleton continued:
“You think you’re gonna get a movie as good as Boyz In The Hood for you? No.
They have no movies for you, Cube.
You’re gonna have to write your own.”
So Cube started writing.
His first two scripts were terrible.
His third was Friday.
Your work may not have anything to do with Hollywood, but the lesson here is universal.
No one is coming to give you the opportunity you seek.
You have to create it.
And you create it by doing the thing you want before anyone’s willing to pay you to do it.
You get your dream job AFTER you start doing your dream work.
