You Don’t Need To Convince People To Work With You

I got a strange email last week.

It was from someone who told me she tried a LinkedIn post format I suggested recently and got incredible results.

“Wowza!,” she said when sharing the results.

Then she told me she’s thinking of joining my membership, but wondered how I know I’d like to work with her.

She said:

“I wonder if you can handle me. I’m contrarian, abrasive, cynical, jaded, smart, and I challenge everything. I’m a boomer…says it all.”

Uh…ok.

She went on to ask how I work with “(potentially) demanding, scrappy people.”

Then asked me to give her a discount on the membership because she lives in a different country.

How would you have replied to an email like that?

Here’s what I said to her:

“There’s only one price and no adjustment for people who live in different countries – sorry.

As far as your question goes, I usually know I want to work with my audience because I attract a certain type of person.

That said, it seems like you’re not sure you’re that kind of person so maybe it’s not a good fit.

I don’t believe in ‘convincing’ people to work with me and you seem to be looking for reasons not to.

That’s totally fine.

My stuff isn’t for everybody and maybe it’s not for you.”
