The Battle For Your Attention

Everybody wants your attention.

For their product, for their service, for themselves.

Once upon a time, incredibly valuable businesses were built on their ability to deliver your attention to other companies, organizations, and ideas.

But then the Internet happened.

Now, literally anybody in the world can reach everybody on the planet for zero cost. And just like that, the distribution economy died.

Most people that work in advertising or traditional media will tell you that’s not true, but it is…they just haven’t realized it yet.

The value of distribution may have vanished, but the battle for your attention rages on in a different way.

Now, that battle isn’t about who is going to capture your attention to sell to others, but rather it’s about who can provide you with the best ways to get attention for yourself.

Think about it: the success of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and other rapidly growing platforms is based on their ability to enable you to get more attention for yourself.

That’s the core of our new attention economy.

So don’t obsess over how you’re going to get attention for your latest creation. You’ll be better served to think about how what you create will make it easier for people to attract more attention to themselves.

Because that’s what we all want these days, isn’t it?
