Stop Trying To Figure Out What’s Written By AI

I don’t care if you think my content was written by AI.

There’s only one thing I care about:

Is it useful?

As a writer, that’s my goal.

I don’t let AI write for me because it can’t write as well as me.

(Side note: You’ll notice good writers don’t bother having AI write for them because they know it can’t do what they do.)

But…

I also don’t spend a second worrying whether others think I used AI to write or not.

That’s their problem, not mine.

This thing where people dumb down their writing or “prove” their humanity is idiotic.

It’s just as big a waste of time trying to catch people who do use AI in their writing.

One of my newsletter readers told me an article I linked to “was really excellent – the content and message and insights were A+.”

But he went to say he felt conflicted about liking it because he believes AI was involved in its creation.

My response to him:

Why do you care if the author used AI or not?

You even said yourself you believe it to be the author’s own ideas.

Don’t get caught up in this game of “AI Gotcha!”

I wish people were less interested in figuring out what’s AI and more interested in figuring out what’s actually valuable.

On a slightly different note…

Almost everything we read, consume, and love was created by someone who had help creating it.

TV shows are written by entire writing rooms of people.

Books are edited by editors.

Musicians sample other music.

Journalists have editors and sources.

Yes, those are all humans and it’s a bit apples and oranges.

But we don’t hold it against people for getting help with those creations, so why should this be different?

Very little is created by one individual with no interaction or assistance from someone or something else.

(Pretty much every photo you see has been touched up with the help of technology.)

Even if it’s just your spouse looking over something and giving you notes, you still had help with it.

But we don’t discount the quality of that work because the creator had help with it.

We judge the final product on its merits – not on how it came to be.

If a piece of writing is bad because AI helped with it (most are), then sure, hate on it.

But if a piece of writing is good?

Stop trying to convince yourself it’s not worthy of your praise.

Anyone else tired of this whole conversation?

(Asked the human writer who just added to that conversation with this post.)
