Just Start Doing It

An unemployed friend found out today he didn’t get a job he hoped to get.

He’s frustrated, and not quite sure what to do next.

Here’s what I think he should do…

Figure out what your dream job is and start doing it.

Don’t wait for somebody to hire you. Don’t wait to find a similar job you can apply for. Don’t wait for somebody to recommend you to somebody else. Don’t wait for a “break.”

Just start doing it.

Don’t worry about getting paid. You can find a way to get by on odd jobs or temp work.

Start doing what you ultimately want to do. This isn’t a moment of despair – it’s a moment of opportunity.

It’s tougher to leave a job to pursue your dream than it is to pursue your dream when you have nothing to lose.

But the trick is you have to be willing to just start doing it.  Most people aren’t, and that’s why they never get their dream job.

But you can.

Want to be a marketer? Start marketing something.

Want to be a graphic designer? Start designing something.

Want to be a stockbroker? Start giving somebody stock tips.

Want to be an entrepreneur? Start selling something.

It’s easy to come up with excuses as to why you can’t do your dream job. But those excuses are bullshit. Ignore them.

Just because you can’t get your dream job, doesn’t mean you can’t DO your dream job.

Volunteer. Work for free. Hustle.

Create things. Share things. Get seen. Get better.

Somebody, somewhere, needs what you can deliver.

You will get experience and you will create opportunity.

Do the work, regardless of the immediate rewards.

This will lead to things you can’t currently imagine.

You don’t need somebody to give you the opportunity to do the work you dream of doing. You just need to decide to do it.

And once you do, you’ll be amazed what happens next.

Good luck.

Thx Molly. Nike might have been on to something with that slogan after all…

Great advice, J-Spec. Do SOMETHING. Don’t WAIT for something to be done for/to you. When I realized that at the ripe old age of 22, everything changed and has continued to progress.

Thanks Todd. It’s crazy how simple it is once you start doing it. It’s not easy, but it’s simple.
