Mike D of the Beastie Boys was asked how he got out of his own head when making his first solo album and said this:
“In the beginning, I was just like, ‘I’m in such a free place. I don’t care what people think.’
And then I was committed to releasing it, and I realized, ‘F*ck, I really DO care what people think.’
And I was devastated by it.
All of a sudden you realize that you’re not impervious to all the opinions that the world’s going to have about you, that you’re too old, you’re too slow, whatever you have to say doesn’t mean anything anymore.
You just have to accept that anxiety’s part of the mix.
I think it’s a privilege to care about what I’m putting out into the world.
And baked into that is all the insecurity that comes with it.”
So, so true.
There’s a misconception that productive creators don’t fear the judgment of others, but that’s not the case.
They just don’t let that fear hold them back.
When I read this quote in a Rolling Stone interview I knew I had to share it because I know many people who needed to hear it.
And remember it.
Including myself.
