If you struggle to come up with content ideas, it may be because you’re missing some easy opportunities for valuable content.
Here’s a simple system to generate ideas consistently:
I started a “Mistake List” and it’s a content goldmine.
The concept is simple:
When I come across a piece of content someone else created that I think does something wrong or is missing an opportunity, I add it to a list.
For each one I then write a post about the mistake and how to correct it.
(I’ll link to some recent examples in the comments.)
I don’t call out the person who made the mistake or reveal their actual content because the point isn’t to criticize or make them feel bad.
But I appreciate the inspiration they don’t realize they’re giving me.
You may not be in the content strategy advice business, but you can use a version of a Mistake List to come up with content ideas for your own niche as well.
Did someone do something dumb in a meeting? Add it to your Mistake List.
Are you shocked a business made a certain decision? Add it to your Mistake List.
Do you see an ad that fundamentally misunderstands what your market wants? Add it to your Mistake List.
Unfortunately (luckily?), mistakes are everywhere.
Take advantage of them.
And spin them into content gold.
