The Oscars, Breaking Twitter, and Beating Barack

The third time’s a charm – at least it was for me last night in my third Oscars as head of digital media for The Academy. Here’s a few of  the highlights…

I Hate The Term “Selfie,” But…

I guess I have to love it now. That’s because this pic Ellen tweeted during the show got a million retweets in an hour, has 3+ million at this point, and became the most retweeted tweet of all time – and  yes, I had something to do with it.  Oh, and also the tweet that we beat was this amazing one from Barack Obama.

As the Ellen selfie (there’s that word again) went crazy online, we actually wound up crashing Twitter due to all the action. That led me to grab a screenshot and tweet this from the Academy account – it might be my favorite tweet since I’ve been there.

My Oscar Photo.

My other big Twitter invention last night was My Oscar Photo, a thing we created to allow fans to tweet their photos and have them appear on the red carpet next to various celebrities. It worked well – here’s some examples:

Meanwhile, On Instagram…

We were capturing cool moments you don’t usually get to see. Like Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington rocking out to Pharell.

And On YouTube…

We posted one of my favorite videos that we’ve made since I’ve worked at the Academy – shot using Google Glass and featuring a thank you message to all the people who make the Oscars happen.

One More Time From The Back…

While the selfie (ugh) was conquering the Internet, Chrissy Teigen had posted this – ensuring that all angles were covered of this historic Twitter moment.
