Always Assume Success

The image below is an email I got from one of my members – here’s what led to it.

He was trying to figure out the next move in his business and asked for my advice.

Here’s what I told him:

There is no “right” approach.

You can succeed in a variety of ways, so I think the better way to think about it is what end result are you looking for and what type of work do you want to do.

I like to assume success – if you could go any of a variety of paths and know that you’d make the same amount of money or have the same level of success, which would you choose?

Then optimize for that.

Basically, instead of looking for the right path, pick a path and figure out how to make it right.

Once you know where you want to end up, all the other questions become easier because it gives you a filter to make decisions.

The other thing to keep in mind here is whatever you choose to do doesn’t have to be a lifetime commitment – you can just start things as an experiment.

For example, when I launched my podcast I decided to do 12 episodes over the course of 3 months and see how it went and how I felt about it.

It was a 3-month experiment which I then decided to continue.

To sum up, my advice is to start with the work/life you think you’d most enjoy, THEN figure out the best strategy to get there, and start to implement it with little experiments until you find your way.
