I’ve avoided writing a book for years.
For reasons that are only starting to become clear to me.
I’d tell myself lies like this:
• I don’t have a strong enough idea
• Books don’t make money
• It’s not a good use of my time
• I don’t have the patience to do it
• I don’t want to go on a book tour
• Everyone who writes a book says it’s a miserable experience
It’s been easy to convince myself not to write one.
And yet…
I’ve written daily for YEARS.
I have no trouble coming up with ideas to share.
I have no shortage of things I want to say.
I already have a large audience who values what I write.
Writing isn’t overwhelming to me – I enjoy it.
I already make enough money to live comfortably (most of which is generated by writing).
And…
I’ve written the equivalent of multiple books while avoiding writing a book.
So, what’s my deal?
I’m starting to unravel the REAL reasons I’ve avoided a book.
As my therapist said the other day:
“You’re getting caught up in the outcome.”
Oof, that hit hard.
Because I pride myself on NOT getting hung up on outcomes.
I believe in focusing on output (which you can 100% control) as opposed to outcome (which you can never control).
I believe in making decisions based on a pursuit of enjoyment – not a pursuit of money.
And I’ve found time and again that when I do that, good things happen.
The truth is I don’t need to make some big decision to write a book because I’ve already written one.
I just need to wake up and realize it.
Luckily, my eyes are now open.
I can’t wait to see what comes next.
