If your workspace feels slightly “off,” it might be affecting more than just your mood.
Small environmental issues can quietly impact your focus and productivity more than you realize.
My desk has been crooked for a year.
Because when I bought a light stand a year ago, there wasn’t room for my desk to be flush against the wall.
I don’t even like the light, but that’s not the point.
The point is every day I work at a desk that’s slightly crooked.
Which I assume sends a subconscious signal to me at all times that things are not quite in order.
That something is “off.”
That I don’t care enough to make it “right.”
That’s not good.
Our environment matters more than we like to admit.
It sends subtle – and sometimes not so subtle – cues to us.
It wasn’t just a desk positioned as crooked as a camera shot in the old Batman TV show that was screwing with the “vibes” in my office.
There were also the computer speakers.
Ugh, those speakers.
Around the time I bought the light stand, I also bought two computer speakers to put on my desk.
I hated them immediately and don’t use them.
Yet…
For a year they sat on my desk – taking up physical space and sitting there as some kind of shrine to a regretful investment.
Despite knowing both of these “mistakes” were easily correctable, I never took the time to do so.
Until yesterday.
That’s when I finally moved my light so my desk could be flush against the wall and boxed up the speakers to get them off my desk.
It took 15 minutes.
It’s amazing how little time it takes to fix the things we avoid when we finally stop avoiding them.
Not surprisingly, I immediately felt better about my workspace.
I bet there are a couple things in your environment that aren’t helping you either.
Take this post as a sign it’s time to do something about them.
You won’t regret it.
