60 Minutes profiles Peter Thiel’s plan to pay students to drop out of college

May 24, 2012

This is a pretty interesting piece. Thiel’s right in that our current education system is a mess and is badly in need of disruption. But, he’s also a little shortsighted in thinking that dropping out is a better solution for everybody.

Getting a good general education including the basics of proper English, useful math and even more of the real everyday tools people should have to get the most out of their day to day lives is essential. I believe our elementary and high school system could do a lot better in this area. They have us for 12 – 13 years (a very long time) during the time we are most able and interested in absorbing information and it seems most of the focus is on preparing us for more education – SAT scores!
Post secondary education is for those that want to go into a specific careen that demands specialized training and information. You wouldn’t want your doctor direct from high school!
Getting themselves and their parents into a huge debt is a big sacrifice to make for a piece of paper that is quickly becoming worthless, since so many people have one.
The best advertising for colleges and universities is the belief that you can’t compete with out a diploma
Instead find a passion and follow a path of leaning that equips you to either start your own business or make you attractive to someone who would like an employee that has knowledge, passion and some practical experience and went about getting these tools through their own initiative – much more impressive
Since you are going to pay to go to school you could instead offer yourself for on the job training for free or for little return for a certain period of time plus there are courses that are specific to just about every career and job on the planet available on the internet, night school or through specialized courses with out a lot of filler
Spend time finding your passion first, then find the least expensive and fastest way to get an education in your passion and then get to it!!!
I couldn’t find anything at 19 years old that interested me in College so I eventually started my own business and to this day I have almost no idea if my associates have a University or College degree. I work with them because they are competent, reliable
and are passionate about what we do. That’s usually all I need to know or care about!
You can’t afford to get by without an education and now you can’t afford to buy an education, that means it’s time for some alternative ideas! Good job Peter Theil!
