The Timekiller Ten: Treme, Rock Bitches, and The Secret To Life

May 3, 2010

10 things on my mind…and now on yours.

1. I’ve heard rumors that my site is still a little buggy as a result of it recently being hacked. I think I’ve got it fixed, but it’s really annoying. Please let me know if you feel like the site’s doing any weird stuff (other than the weird stuff that it’s supposed to do).

2. I’m three episodes into Treme and I think I’m starting to love it. I can’t get enough of the music, and when the music is half the show it’s pretty hard not to like it. I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head since I watched the great sequence it was featured in during the first episode.

3. Courtney Love was on Howard Stern the other day. She was as crazy as you would expect (even though theoretically sober now), but in the midst of her craziness she pointed out that she’s the only rock chick still around. The “last bitch standing” as she said, and the scary thing is I think she may be right. What other real female rock star can you think of these days?  And no, Lady Gaga does not count.

4. I downloaded two albums a couple minutes ago – Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ “I Learned The Hard Way” (which I’m listening to as I write this) and Ozomatli’s “Fire Away.”

5. I’ve always thought that the key to being a good basketball player wasn’t just your talent, but more importantly your ability to understand your talent. A bad player who understands what they can contribute and stays away from trying to do the things they’re not good at is way more valuable than a guy who is more talented but insists on trying to do the things he’s not good at. I recently was talking to somebody about this and realized that it’s not just true for basketball – it might be even more true in business and in life in general. You don’t have to have the most talent – you have to know what you’re good at, what you’re not good at, and play to your strengths. That’s how you win.

6. One of these days, I’m going to have a radio show. Of course, it will be online and not technically on the “radio,” but it will happen. It’s been added to my (ever-increasing) list of things I’m going to do “one of these days.”

7. If you’ve never been to Papa Cristos, you need to go. It’s like the Greek version of Bay Cities. You won’t regret it.

8. You never expect somebody like Padma Lakshmi to say anything interesting and then she says this: “Rituals of death are for the living. The dead have had their experience with it, and it goes with them.”

9. I’ve got a bunch of shows set up for season passes on Tivo that I no longer watch. Sorry, Justified, V, and The Pacific – you lost me and I don’t think I’m coming back.

10. The Bonnaroo lineup looks incredible this year, but I just can’t see myself roughing it for three days in Nashville to make it happen. And when I try to picture myself doing that, all I see is grumpiness. It’s official…I’m old.

BONUS!

11. Still listening to that Sharon Jones album and holy shit it sounds great at midnight on a Monday night when you’re blogging up a storm.
